CHINA:  GUILIN

Overall recommendations: We kind of liked this city… the amazing rolling hills/mountains were GORGEOUS! Although I read online that people said to skip Guilin and go straight to Yangshou (very close by town) and I SHOULD have taken that advice, because Yangshou was such a cute little town!  Careful for the CRAZY motor scooters in this city, they will run you over!!

HOSTEL WE STAYED AT:  Green Forest Hostel, No.110-25 Zhongshan South Road, Guilin 541002.
Would recommend this place… was pretty decent!click here to see my review.

CHINA:  GUANGZHO

Overall recommendations: We really didn’t care for Guangzho. It’s essentially just a big business city with WAY too many people!!

HOSTEL WE STAYED AT: Langri House, NOT RECOMMENDED!!

CHINA:  XI’AN

Overall recommendations: Loved this city!  We rented a tandem bike and rode around on top the city wall, visited the Muslim quarter and ate some fabulous food, watched a fun light show at the Wild Goose Pagoda at night, and of course visited the Terra Cotta Warriors!   Note, that if you visit the Warriors, you should visit the pits in REVERSE ORDER… start at pit 3, then 2, then 1…  pit 1 is the largest and the one that you always see photos of, so you’ll want to start with the less impressive ones and work your way to the main one. Much more rewarding this way!

HOSTEL WE STAYED AT: Warriors Youth Hostel, No.98 Beimadao Alley, Xi’an 710002.
Would recommend this place because it was clean and they had lots of social events and free food. The location was a bit out of the main area, though… there weren’t a ton of good restaurants around, and we were always have to WAAAALK to get anywhere. I would stay here again, though, if I were in town.

CHINA:  YANGSHUO

Overall recommendations: We loved Yangshou!  We had such lovely memories here of biking through the majestic green hills/mountains, and we also took a bamboo boat tour down the river as well. The little town is cute and bustling… but BEWARE of the prices in the main/downtown area… SO OVERPRICED!!!  You should be able to get a plate of food for like $2.50 or so a person… go to the smaller, local joints further away from that downtown area. Oh yea, and we had quite an experience at one of the local markets here… they sold dog and cat (meat) there! Yikes. That’s their culture, though, so just observe and be respectful (and try not to get too torn up by it all.)

HOSTEL WE STAYED AT: Yangshuo Travellers Land Youth Hostel, No.36 Wuteng Alley, Yangshuo County 541900.
Highly recommended! The owner was fantastic and So fun and kind! Since we stayed here one week, he invited us to have dinner with his family one night, what an interesting treat! There are movie nights every night, and computers in the common room that can get facebook!  Our private room was pretty much like a hotel room, and for $12 a night for two of us, it was SUCH A BARGAIN! Only thing is the bathroom smelled HORRIBLE… but that’s typical in most Chinese/Asian hostel or hotel bathrooms!  Oh yea, and bring/buy your own soap and TP… but again, that’s typical China.

CHINA:  ZHANGJIAJIE

Overall recommendations: Wow, we LOVED LOVED LOVED ZHANGJIAJIE National Park!  It’s like the Grand Canyon of China… and most people don’t know about it (outside of China)!!  You MUST visit here, if you actually have the time and patience to get here via train and whatever else it takes 🙂  Majestic mountains and canyons… and monkeys swinging through all the time!  We stayed almost one week here and hiked probably 5 days in the park. There’s a reason why scenery in the movie Avatar looks so amazing… it’s because it’s based on this gorgeous park!

HOTEL WE STAYED AT: Jinjiang Inn Zhangjiajie Ziwu Road, No.51 Ziwu Road, Yongding District, Zhangjiajie 427000.
This place was OK, overall. The room itself was great, but wifi only available in reception, and it often dropped out. **If you are going to the Zhangjiajie National Park, this is FAR from it… and will cost you a lot of time and money if you plan to go in and out of the park a few times. We only stayed here a couple nights, then moved to a hostel in Wulingyuan, which was right near the entrance of the park.

HOSTEL WE STAYED AT: Wulingyuan Zhongtian International Youth Hostel, 100m North from Zixiaguan, Baofeng Road, Wulinyuan District, Zhangjiajie 427303.
This place was decent overall, but the main BONUS was how close it was to the Zhangjiajie National Park!  The room and bathroom was a bit disgusting, but we dealt with it. The main area downstairs had great wifi, and the food there was pretty great!… and convenient.

JAPAN:  SUZAKA (NAGANO AREA)

Overall recommendations: Coming soon!

HOSTEL WE STAYED AT: KURA Guest House. Nice cultural experience and woman was extremely nice… you slept on mats on the floor. But it was freezing there and walls were paper thin… literally (they were Japanese paper wall dividers!) Still a fun experience, though 🙂

EUROPE

VARIOUS

I took two tours over the years with Contiki Vacations…. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!  I really loved the tours, the guides, and the really amazing life-long friends I made along the way. If you are traveling alone or with a friend, it still is a great thing to do (to join a tour group), and it’s great because the group is limited to 18-35 year olds, so you don’t get “stuck” with kids or older (slower) people in the group….which is the main complaint I’ve heard from other tour groups. Contiki operates not only in Europe, but many other areas around the world. www.contiki.com

SOUTH AMERICA

PERU:  LIMA, MIRAFLORES

HOSTEL I STAYED AT:, 151 Backpacker Hostel B&B, Calle Colon 151, Lima, Peru Lima 18, http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/peru/lima/40957/

My review: Pretty good, enjoyed staying here in a private room. It was a bit cold, but the guy running the place was very nice and accommodating. I was a bit disappointed more people weren’t staying here, as I had wished to meet more people.

Read more about my experience here:  http://new.breannaroundtheworld.com/2011/09/freezing-in-lima/

PERU:  CUZCO, MACHU PICCHU

TOUR I TOOK: MACHU PICCHU, 3 day Lares Trek

Tour company: Cultural Immersion, Calle San Andres 471, Cusco, 05184, www.culturalimmersion.org

My review:  I REALLY enjoyed this 3 day trek through the Peruvian mountains to Machu Picchu! The tour guide was really awesome, the porters (who carried our luggage and cooked food for us) were amazing, and the group was a smaller size (5 of us.) I was bummed at booking that I wasn’t able to book the actual Inca Trail tour/hike, but after doing this tour I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this trek over the Inca Trail trek. Why?  Because with this hike, we spent our nights camping out in tents on the actual land of the villages with the people who lived there. We met families, children, and animals, it was quite a unique and cultural experience!

PERU:  PUERTO MALDONADO

TOUR I TOOK: Tambopata Research Center, 6 days and 5 nights

Tour company: Rainforest Expeditions, http://www.perunature.com/

My review: I really loved this tour! It was SO UNIQUE, as I had to take a motorized canoe up the river 6+ hours to get to the final lodge!  My tour guide was really nice, EXTREMELY knowledgeable, fun, and helped me practice my Spanish the whole time. I was a bit bummed, though, that I ended up being the ONLY person in my “group”!… you would think that is a good thing, as you pretty much have a private tour for the price of a group tour, but I had really wanted to meet people and was disappointed they couldn’t combine me with any other groups. I have to say this tour was a bit long, and I really don’t think I needed to go as far as Tambopata (there were other lodges a bit closer to Puerto Maldonado.) Overall, I highly recommend this tour company!

SOUTH PACIFIC

FRENCH POLYNESIA: MOREA

Overall recommendations: Coming soon!

HOTEL WE STAYED AT: Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora Beach Resort, 98728 Maharepa
Highly recommended! Although nothing in walking distance and food and water in-hotel are PRICY! Overwater bungalows were AHHHH-MAZING!!
Click here to read my review about Sofitel Moorea.

FRENCH POLYNESIA: TAHITI

Overall recommendations: Tahiti and Papeete was OK… but no tourists really stay here. If you are considering overwater bungalows on Tahiti… SKIP IT and go straight to Moorea. Papeete itself is kind of a dirty city, but full of colorful and nice people.

HOTEL WE STAYED AT: Tahiti Airport Motel. NOT RECOMMENDED!! Stayed here one night.
Click here to read my review on this hotel

HOSTEL WE STAYED AT: Taaroa Lodge, B.P. 498, Papeete 98713. NOT RECOMMENDED! Stayed for two nights in the shared dorm… GROSS! It was like glorified camping. Only great thing was free kayak rental and crummy snorkeling gear.
